Visit to Cosprop!
So today, I was lucky enough to visit Cosprop in London! I was very excited but I didn't now exactly what to expect. The main reason for my visit was to learn the difference between film and theatre costume construction as I'd only had experiece with the latter. I met the lovely Judith who took me through to their storeroom (a room in which I would happily live out the rest of my days) and let me dive into their exhibition stock, pieces from films they loaned out for museum exhibitions. The costumes were beautifully constructed and luckily not too different in means of constructions. I often found it hard to concentrate when I noticed the name on the label...
Next, Judith let me have a nose around the mens and womens wear section. I was particularly interested in the mens as there were some elements of my George I coat I couldn't figure out, and couldn't find examples of, for example the braided buttons holes. The examples I saw at cosprop made everything so much clearer! I did notice that although the pieces were historical, they often used modern techniques, such as machined buttonholes. I imagine that this would make them stronger for repeated use, although there were plenty of examples of handsewn elements.
All in all, it was a very useful trip, I learnt so much in such a short time, the people there were lovely and even gave me a bit of careers advice :)
