WBP - Princess Charlotte - Part 2 - Dreaming of Darcy
I've been working furiously over the last few days to complete my regency gown, based on this painting of Princess Charlotte of Wales. Using a pattern from Jean Hunnisett's Period Costume from Stage & Screen. I decided to use fabrics that would be a close to the original as possible, in this example, silk chiffon mounted on cotton lawn. I honestly couldn't have chosen a more difficult fabric to work with than silk chiffon. I'd worked with polyester chiffon before so I thought it would be a breeze but it certainly wouldnt. It moves like there's no tomorrow and it was hard to cut a straight line!
I had to be very careful with my hand sewing, a blunt pin or needle would pucker my fabric and make it look awful and the tinyest thread could catch in my stitching.
The gown needs to look floaty and angelic as this painting was made after the Princesses death.
I had to pin my fabric down as I was stitching it together ths was the only way I could think of doing it!
There was a lot of handsewing involved! including Herringbone stitching EVERYWHERE!
Below is the nearly finished article! I just need a hem at the bottom and some embroidery and we are finished!
